As the leaves turn, the calendar is filling up fast with K9 cultural activities for New York City's dog lovers.  This weekend, the season gets off to a great start - and if you don't already have a dog, there are plenty of opportunities to adopt one.

Tomorrow, Saturday October 3rd from 12-5 p.m., the Morrison Hotel Gallery will host an adoption event at its Soho location, featuring eligible, adoptable pets from local rescue groups.  The event is also a celebration of "In Perfect Harmony: Music Legends and their Animals," a 2010 calendar designed to raise funds for Rational Animal, a non-profit organization that raises awareness of at-risk animals.

Among the music icons appearing in the calendar are Roger Waters, Ian Anderson, Billie Holiday, Michael Jackson, Patti Smith, Sting, Neil Young, and Moby.  The piece de resistance is the cover, featuring a wonderfully whimsical portrait of Pete Townshend playing the banjo for his English Cocker Spaniel Towser.  The picture was taken by legendary photographer Barrie Wentzell chief photographer for Melody Maker from 1965-1975.  Townshend graciously autographed a print of the image to raise funds for at-risk animals.  To buy the calendar, go here.

Meanwhile, on a different musical note, Pet-Rox, a blues-rock band comprised entirely of musicians with day jobs in animal care and welfare (including renowned house call veterinarian Dr. Jeffrey Levy), will perform at tomorrow's St. Francis Day Blessing of the Animals.  Dogs are welcome to receive a blessing from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Upper West Side's Grace & St. Paul's Church.

The following day, Sunday October 4th, Pet-Rox plays another Upper West Side event: the Fall Harvest on West 69th Street between Columbus Avenue and Broadway, which hosts its Dog Parade at 2 p.m.

Finally, to celebrate dogs and all animals on the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, Sunday is also the date of an animal-blessing and adoption event in Brooklyn, at St. Edmund's Church.  The Brooklyn Animal Foster Network will supply the blessed homeless dogs looking for loving new homes.
