Martha and her Chow named Paw Paw. |
Martha Stewart is a lot of fun and she gets a big kick out of her animals. She is also a neighbor. My daughter, Annie, and I spent a recent morning with her. We rode through the magical landscape of her farm, on her huge and very beautiful Friesian horses—feeling as if we should be in full knight's armor. We visited her 200 chickens, her three miniature Sicilian donkeys; played with Francesca and Sharkey—her French Bulldogs—and hugged Bartok and Vivaldi—two of her four Himalayan cats. Paw Paw, Martha's old and sage Chow Chow, lay on the floor, looking like an exotic furry pillow. Then we hung out in her iconic kitchen, sipping perfect cappuccinos, eating cookies and laughing at the antics of Francesca and Sharkey, who sat on stools beside us. In her presence, one gets the feeling that Martha's mental acuity, energy, drive and fierce curiosity are infinite. Having already accomplished enough to fill five lifetimes, she is full of enough plans, ideas and projects for, at least, another five. She is truly remarkable. As we said goodbye, Martha handed us a carton of a dozen fresh eggs—all sizes and colors—that had been collected that morning. I am thrilled to welcome Martha, as well as her designated charity, the ASPCA, to LIVELY LICKS, and I'm sure you will get a kick out of what she has to say.

Glenn Close: How long have you loved dogs?
Martha Stewart: As long as I can remember... Ever since 'Shiner,' a Fox Terrier, first arrived at our home.
GC: Why dogs?
MS: Well I love all animals... I live on a farm with horses, miniature donkeys, 200 chickens, cats, owls etc... But I LOVE my dogs because they are so loyal and such marvelous company.
GC: If your dogs were hosting an intimate dinner party, who would be on the guest list? What would be on the menu?
MS: Guests: Rutger (horse), Rufus (miniature donkey), Bartok (cat) and Laura (housekeeper), as she feeds us and it's only fair to reciprocate the kindness from time to time.
Menu:
Chicken liver 'Faux Gras', followed by chargrilled boneless breast of corn-fed chicken, served with Vichy carrots and cottage cheese quenelles, finished off with bone marrow pate de fruits.
GC: If your dogs had hobbies, what would they be?
MS: Paw Paw would be a philatelist, Francesca would hunt pheasant and Sharkey would be a pole-vaulter.
GC: If your dogs were famous people, who would they be?
MS: Paw Paw would be Winston Churchill and Francesca and Sharkey would be... Zsa Zsa & Eva Gabor
GC: What musical instruments would your dogs play?
MS: Paw Paw would play the cello, Sharkey would play the drums and Francesca would play the glockenspiel.
GC: What kind of cars would your dogs drive?
MS: Paw Paw would drive a Prius Hybrid, Francesca would drive a VW Beetle and Sharkey would drive a Mini Cooper.

MS: Paw Paw- 'Paw Paw's Story: The Autobiography of Socialite, Philanthropist & World Traveler'
Francesca- 'Off the Record: My Close Shaves with Faux Bois'
Sharkey- 'The Importance of Being Famous: Red Carpets I Have Stained'
GC: What is your dogs' favorite holiday?
MS: The 4th of July... for all the hot dogs!
GC: Do they have special talents or any endearing idiosyncrasies?
MS: Francesca is a very good movie critic. She watches from start to finish and expresses her pleasure or dismay.
Sharkey is a very good runner of hurdles and pays close attention to instruction.
Paw Paw is known to endear himself to just about everyone.

ASPCA - www.aspca.org
The ASPCA was founded in 1866 as the first humane organization in the Western Hemisphere. The Society was formed to alleviate the injustices animals faced then, and we continue to battle cruelty today. Whether it's saving a pet who has been accidentally poisoned, fighting to pass humane laws, rescuing animals from abuse or sharing resources with shelters across the country, we work toward the day in which no animal will live in pain or fear. |
GC: How do your dogs deal with competition? What's their pecking order?
MS: They all think they are top dog, but Francesca normally comes first!
GC: What do your dogs think of cats?
MS: They think of them as additional toys.

MS: No comment.
GC: How do your dogs deal with 200 chickens?
MS: They think of them as dinner served 200 different ways.
GC: Where do your dogs sleep at night?
MS: In my bedroom with me.
GC: Is there a secret about you that only your dogs know?
MS: The combination to my safe.
GC: What are your dogs' pet peeve about you?
MS: They don't see enough of me and I don't sleep for long enough at night.
GC: What is your pet peeve about all your dogs?
MS: Flatulence at the dinner table.
GC: Where do your dogs hang out at home?
MS: In the kitchen or riding around my farm on the Kawasaki.
GC: Are your dogs fashion hounds?
MS: Absolutely!
GC: What is it about you that makes your dogs so proud?
MS: My TV show.

GC: How will your dogs celebrate Mother's Day?
MS: By making me a very delicious breakfast and serving it to me in bed!

I CAUGHT THE ST. PATRICK'S DAY SHOW WITH GLEN CLOSE & HER HUSBAND ON. I THOROUGHLY ENJOYED IT & IMMEDIATELY WENT TO THE WEB SITE & REGISTERED WITH THEM. I WAS DISAPPOINTED THAT THE CAINE CORSO (ITALIAN MASTIFF) WAS NOT LISTED ON THE LIST OF DOG BREEDS. THAT'S THE DOG MY DAUGHTER IS PLANNING ON GETTING, (TO MY DISMAY). IT'S A VERY LARGE DOG & SHE HAS SMALL, VERY ACTIVE CHILDREN. ANYWAY, I JUST WANTED TO SAY I REALLY ENJOYED THE WEBSITE & MARTHA, I'M ONE OF YOUR BIGGEST FANS & I ALWAYS TRY TO WATCH YOUR SHOW & SOMETIMES HAVE TO TIVO IT. I ALSO SUBSCRIBE TO 2 OF YOUR MAGAZINES & HAVE SEVERAL BOOKS. LIKE I SAID, HUGE FAN! BLESS YOU ALL FOR THE GOOD WORK YOU DO. SINCERELY, ANITA J. BAKER

Dear Martha,
For many years I have supported and orginization called Best Friends Animal Society in Utah. Would you ever consider profiling them on your show? They rescue all kinds of animals, try to adopt them, and keep the rest for life. They are worth taking a look at. Thank you, D Gavula

Great interview with Martha. What connects us--the famous and the not--is our love for our animals.

I love your show Martha, I really like it when you have animals on. Also saw the show with Glen Close and glad to know that she too, is a animal lover. I have an almost 12 year old Bichon. I also like to draw animals in pastel. Since I retired that is what I like to do. This year in my hometown of Decatur, Ill. There will be an all day fun day called "Woofstock". There will be a Pet Parade and different Pet friendly Vendors, all to benift a no kill Pet Shelter, called Homeward Bound Pet Shelter.

I loved the questions that you ask to Martha. I usually watch her shows and love it when the dogs are on. You can tell that Martha loves her dogs, she and I would make great friends because of our love for animals. My husband has told me that I am never allowed to work for a Zoo or animal shelter because we would bring all the animals to our house. But I wanted to tell Martha that my dog Lucky who is a black Crocker Spaniel loves to watch her show with me he sits on the recliner in between my legs and listens to every word. Thank you , Carol Gammons --Madison, Indiana
