Jake, Bill and I are going on The View tomorrow. They are still up in Maine with Dave---far away from their usual groomer---so they will have the scruffy, country look. As long as their moustaches are clean, they will be as cute as ever. It's not fair. It's like a guy getting ready for a formal affair. He throws on his tux and is done. It doesn't matter if the tux is 10 years old. It still looks great.

It's a little bit more complicated for me. The View is a women's show. They notice...everything. They slave at first impressions. I've got an elegant blue suit with sexy high-heels, but I'm not gliding out with a sleek greyhound or a Papillion. Bill and Jake are Montana mutts---"McAllister Specials"---to be truly authentic I should wear a pair of jeans, a t-shirt and flip-flops. But I haven't shopped for jeans in about 5 years and my favorite, best-fitting pair has a tear in the crotch that I got from climbing over the fence on our terrace in the city to chat with our neighbor, Phyllis.

Maybe a seamstress at The View could do a quick repair, but that's kind of embarrassing and anyway, the pair of Prada platforms that look best with jeans has a big smudge on them from playing "Shoe Golf" out in New Jersey. It's too late to shop.

Oh for a fur-covered body! Wouldn't it be wonderful to only have to worry about chronic matting behind my ears or whether my moustache will look okay if I sip some water on camera? Of course, the right shampoo would be essential and I'd probably have to use the correct conditioner and some gel to add sheen and something else to add body---especially in the tricky places.

Have you seen how much product is out there? How can one possibly know what's the best? I could go online, but where do you start when over a million choices are staring you in the face? On second thought, it'd be awkward joining someone for lunch on a rainy day if my body were covered with fur... where would I shake?

Maybe Bill and Jake should go on The View by themselves and I'll watch them at home...in a bathrobe.

I saw you on The View this morning and got a kick out of your dogs. I have 2 myself. A Shih Tzu named Beefy and a Miniature Schnauzer name Elote. (Look up elote in a Spanish dictionary - you'll get a kick out of the name!) I, like yourself, have been around dogs all of my life. I have had several different breeds and mutts. They all are WONDERFUL! The unconditional love is the best. My Elote is a riot. He's a year old and still has a lot of puppy in him. My husband and I were on our back patio last night watching him run from one end of the yard to the other. Non-stop for about 10 minutes with his 6 foot rope in his mouth. He just cracks me up!! Now Beefy, on the other hand, is 9 years old and he is becoming the "old man" of the house. He plays with Elote when he wants. And that is definitely on his terms. But, of all of the dogs I've owned, I believe Beefy has been the smartest. Not that my other dogs were dumb - he just learned his tricks (all 7 of them) in one week. He's the love of my life as well. I just wanted to let you know that I truly enjoy you as an actress and am very pleased that you truly love dogs! I look forward to seeing you in any of your upcoming projects. Thanks for all you and your husband are doing to help dogs! Janelle Grand Junction, CO

Loved seeing you and your adorable dogs, Bill and Jake, on the View this morning. But I did want to know what their breed is? I know you said Montana mutts, but which breed dominates? I so agree with your comment about lo√ing them for the unconditional love they give to all. How true! I'm also so happy to learn about Fetchdog.com. This is a wonderful website and I will be visiting often. I used to do oil portraits of dogs for a living, but I am retired now. I fell in love with every dog I ever painted! I saw Ms. Close on the View and she was beautiful, as always. I'd already watched her on the Tony Awards the evening before where it was noted that she'd previously won 3 Tony Awards! I never really knew much about Ms. Close in the past, other than her being a wonderful actor and comedian. I have to say I was so pleasantly surprised when I saw her on the View with her two babies. I was so proud that she didn't have to have a "pedigreed" dog, just her sweet little mixed white dogs, one with a cute underbite in all his ill-bred glory! Way to go Ms. Close...they make some of the best dogs, don't they? The dog that was on her lap kept looking up at her and you could just see how much he loved her! That is when I became her great fan. When a dog loves you that much, you're alright in my book. You and your husband should be very proud of this website and all that you are doing for dogs!

I saw part of your appearance on The View this morning. The dogs are adorable. You spoke of a woman who had lost her maltese and I could not help but relate to that story. My beloved maltese, Sparky, died of congestive heart failure on August 16th of last year. Yesterday would have been his 13th birthday. Not a day goes by that I don't miss him and remember all the joy he brought into my life. I just cannot express how much I miss him and how there is an emptiness in my life.

I just watched your interview on The View and I have to tell you that I have always respected you as an actress, but it does not compare to the respect I now have for you as a person! I truly love what you are doing for four legged babies with your website, it also warms my heart seeing your link for greyhounds. My husband and I have 2 beautiful rescued retired racers and I am unable to put into words what they have brought to our lives. We became invloved with a great adoption agency in San Diego and try to help these wonderful dogs find "forever homes".

I have been a big fan of Ms. Close for a long time. I especially enjoy her work on Damages. Now having seen her on THE VIEW I adore her even more! Dog people are the best and I have a rescue dog who is my best friend and I applaud her work on behalf of all of our "fur children".

I've just gone on your site and I love it! I live in Australia and would like to draw attention to Animal Saviors Awareness Campaign. This is a campaign that has recently been set up to raise the world's awareness to the disgusting fur trade which is happening in China at this very present day. Did you know that over 2,000,000 dogs and cats are skinned alive for their furs every year? For more information about this you can go to www.animalsaviors.org and please help these poor defenceless animals!

I too saw you on the view and have enjoyed your work for many years. Although I did see a different side of you when watching you a while ago on the BBC Graham Norton Show!!!!! Loved your relaxed sense of humour Yvonne

Hi Glenn, very cool site. I missed the view yesterday but my daughter saw it and just informed me about your site. I love all dogs and think that each and everyone has a story to tell and lessons to teach. I came from a very non dog family but now at 46 I have been a dog groomer, dog walker and I am currently a professional dog trainer, writer and photographer. My life revolves around dogs; what could be better? Justdogswithsherri.blogspot.com Sherri

Welcome to LIVELY LICKS: Profiles of Dogs and their People.
I hope that you will be entertained, comforted and inspired by the people and dogs that I have the privilege of featuring on this blog. Since starting it over a year and a half ago, it has pulled me into an incredible journey. Besides being able to celebrate some of my wonderful friends and the profound bond they have with their dogs, LIVELY LICKS has introduced me to the world of avalanche dogs, bomb-sniffing dogs, service dogs for our wounded warriors and dogs in need of rescue and adoption. I have been inspired by the selfless dedication of the people who run grassroots shelters as well as urban care and control centers. I have been deeply moved by their stories in which dogs heal and empower their humans. Those of us who have dogs, know how much they enhance our quality of life with their unquestioning loyalty and unconditional love. There are an infinite number of stories to tell, so I hope you will stay with me as I continue to explore and discover and delight in the journey.
