Random Licks: Pink Pajamas

One of the funny things about making movies is that often you go around in clothes that you would never think of wearing in public. For example, during the shooting of Fatal Attraction, when we were filming at Alex Forrest's apartment location---at 14th Street and 9th Avenue in Manhattan---I would go from the set to my trailer in a nightgown and bathrobe... and it was cold! The thing I love about New York is that passerby's didn't think there was anything unusual about that. Then there was the time, during the shooting of the same movie, that I had to walk, Gaby, the little white dog I had at the time. We were working in a small studio on the Westside of New York, near a cluster of city housing apartment buildings. There was some nice grass around the buildings so I decided to walk Gaby there. I didn't think to change out of my costume which was a filthy white dress covered with dirt and perhaps even a bit of stage blood or to brush my hair which was wildly unkempt. As I was letting Gaby lead me around the project, I noticed three girls approaching us. They were looking at me and talking amongst themselves and looking again and I suddenly realized that I must be quite a scary sight. As the girls got nearer, I was preparing to explain to them that I was shooting a movie across the street and that I actually hadn't just got mugged. They came within earshot, but before I could make my apologies for my outrageous look, one of the girls squealed, "What an adorable little dog!" They hadn't been looking at me at all! It was my dog they'd noticed. Only in New York.

So the other day, on the Damages set, it wasn't a big deal to walk among the crew and my fellow actors in a pair of pink pajamas. It was really comfortable and I didn't have to wear the usual pair of gorgeous, but savage high-heels. I made Ellen's hotel room set my sanctuary, brought down my computer and the dogs and set up a cozy, doggy internet cafe. The furniture was so comfortable that it was hard to not fall asleep.

About the Author
Welcome to LIVELY LICKS: Profiles of Dogs and their People.
I hope that you will be entertained, comforted and inspired by the people and dogs that I have the privilege of featuring on this blog. Since starting it over a year and a half ago, it has pulled me into an incredible journey. Besides being able to celebrate some of my wonderful friends and the profound bond they have with their dogs, LIVELY LICKS has introduced me to the world of avalanche dogs, bomb-sniffing dogs, service dogs for our wounded warriors and dogs in need of rescue and adoption. I have been inspired by the selfless dedication of the people who run grassroots shelters as well as urban care and control centers. I have been deeply moved by their stories in which dogs heal and empower their humans. Those of us who have dogs, know how much they enhance our quality of life with their unquestioning loyalty and unconditional love. There are an infinite number of stories to tell, so I hope you will stay with me as I continue to explore and discover and delight in the journey.
