On Location

It's good to be back. Most of the original crew has returned so it's like reuniting with your extended family. It will take a few days for us all to get back in rhythm. We were on location in Stuyvesant Park on the lower eastside and then in Chelsea.

Randy and Diana, my make-up and hair team

It's always interesting stepping out of your trailer into a specific New York neighborhood---one that you've probably zoomed through in a cab, but which now becomes a definite world in itself with its own laundries, delis, restaurants and apartment buildings. My trailer was parked alongside a series of grates in the sidewalk. It was difficult for Jake and Bill to step over them. When we next emerged, Harry, the teamster, had put a big piece of cardboard down to smooth their way.

Reunited with Corey

I was reunited with Corey, my fabulous movie dog and met a new dog to the story---Augie. The women who handle them work with The Sanctuary For Animals. It is a rescue group that has a farm in New York State. 15% of their animals are trained to work in the entertainment business. All the money they earn goes back to supporting the other 85%. The animals work only if they enjoy it. The ones who don't work are given a safe haven on the farm or are put into loving homes.

Corey was found in an abandoned gas station in Westchester. He is a herding-type dog and is incredibly smart and eager to please. Last night, he had to walk with me down the sidewalk and, on cue, turn and bark at someone who was following me. He impressed everyone by getting it right 95% of the time.

Augie

Augie was found on a street in Puerto Rico. Yesterday was his first day working on a movie set and he was stellar. He is naturally intelligent so---as long as his squeaky toy was out of sight and his handler had a pocketful of treats---he needed only a few rehearsals to get his bit right.

We wrapped at 2 a.m. So much for the glamorous life. You pull off your costume in your trailer and stagger home----in a ball cap and sweats. The street-sweeping trucks are out and kids are coming out of the clubs. For some the night's a puppy...not for me!

About the Author
Welcome to LIVELY LICKS: Profiles of Dogs and their People.
I hope that you will be entertained, comforted and inspired by the people and dogs that I have the privilege of featuring on this blog. Since starting it over a year and a half ago, it has pulled me into an incredible journey. Besides being able to celebrate some of my wonderful friends and the profound bond they have with their dogs, LIVELY LICKS has introduced me to the world of avalanche dogs, bomb-sniffing dogs, service dogs for our wounded warriors and dogs in need of rescue and adoption. I have been inspired by the selfless dedication of the people who run grassroots shelters as well as urban care and control centers. I have been deeply moved by their stories in which dogs heal and empower their humans. Those of us who have dogs, know how much they enhance our quality of life with their unquestioning loyalty and unconditional love. There are an infinite number of stories to tell, so I hope you will stay with me as I continue to explore and discover and delight in the journey.
