First Hand Experience Behind a Breeder Seizure

I returned home from a spay neuter clinic to find a message on my answering machine.  The authorities would be rescuing approximately 200 dogs the following morning at 7:00 AM.  Would I be able to help document the condition of the animals as they were brought in?

I played a very small part in this operation.  The vets and their techs evaluated the condition of the dogs: weight, temperature, the condition of their skin, fur, ears, eyes and teeth.  Many dogs and other animals were found covered in feces and without food or water.  This occurred on December 30, 2008 in Yellowstone County, MT, at the Shady Lane Kennels.  I am told many complaints had been received against this breeder before the county control officers stepped in.

It was heartbreaking to see the condition of these dogs and how unsocialized they were.  What a miserable life they must have led!  These dogs have been held as "evidence" by the county since then.  Countless hours have been dedicated by volunteers and handlers in an effort to give these dogs a second chance.  A few weekends ago a majority of these dogs were spayed and neutered.  They looked wonderful and the difference in their behavior is amazing!  It is a testament to the selflessness of handlers and volunteers involved.

The breeder in this case pled no contest to ONE aggravated animal cruelty charge in July and was sentenced on August 11, 2009.  A full article about the ruling can be read here.
