A Dog For Christmas? But we're just fostering him, really.

By Kristen Miale

So my family has been looking for a dog for quite awhile.  We've had many excuses in the past as to why we don't have one.  And when you work at FetchDog, believe me, you need an excuse NOT to have a dog.  At first, I had two small children - too much poop and pee and sleepless nights already, thank you very much.  But now, they're aged 6 and 9 and begging for a dog.  More excuses - we need a "hypo-allergenic" dog and one that's good with children.  We'd love a Portuguese Water Dog, but thanks to Obama, you have to wait about four years and pay $1 million.  Okay I'm exaggerating, but you get the point.  Most importantly, given FetchDog's support of dog adoption, I'd rather find an unwanted dog that needs a home rather than "grow" my own.  My husband, however, is very nervous to adopt or get a dog in general.  "We don't have the time", "what if it's not a good fit", the excuses continue.  Covertly, I've been searching the rescue sites and shelter sites for months, but have yet to find the dog for our family.

A Dog Named Christmas MovieSo now I'm going rogue.  Not like Sarah Palin, but dog rescue rogue. I've seen the promos for the upcoming A Dog Named Christmas movie and my children have already begged to stay up late to watch it.  I am intrigued by the concept of fostering a dog for the holidays.  My husband really does love dogs.  We pug sat a few months ago and after two days, he was totally smitten.  So I'm thinking I'll do a good deed and agree to foster a dog for Christmas, just until he finds a good, permanent home - really.  Knowing my husband, that home will be ours.

If you're interested in going dog rescue rogue this holiday season, call your local shelter and see if they participate in the Holiday Fostering Program.  If you're a shelter who wants to participate, check out A Dog Named Christmas to learn how.
