Underdog

Walt Disney Pictures, 2007, 82 minutes - add this title to your Netflix queue

How can you not love a Beagle - the true underdog of the canine world, no flash or glitter, but a come-from-behind kind of dog, as witness the great showing for the breed at Westminster - who has super-powers to save the imperiled but who also speaks in rhyme and has a distinct problem with his landings once he's taken off? "Extreme off-leash" indeed!

Shoeshine, a.k.a. Underdog, is a winsome hound who, through no fault of his own (it's those bad guys with a chemistry set once more) develops even more powerful senses of hearing, smelling, and desire to do good.

I love a cartoon (the original Hanna-Barbera production ran on TV in the early sixties) that retains its comic-book goofiness even when translated to very contemporary special-effects-laden live action. The movie has as sweet a soul as the Beagle it celebrates.

The AKC includes an informative sheet on the attributes of the Beagle, "an ideal choice for families," and the National Beagle Club of America website.
