The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep (Columbia Pictures, 2007, 111 minutes) - Opening December 25, 2007

To view the trailer, go here.

If you saw Millions, you doubtless remember the freckle-faced young actor Alex Etel as saintly little Damian. In The Water Horse, Etel plays a boy named Angus MacMorrow, who, like Damian, comes across a mysterious package - only this one doesn't contain stolen loot. Instead, it's a magical egg housing a hatchling "water horse," a.k.a. the mythical creature known the world over as the Loch Ness monster.

Except, of course, the water horse is no monster. "Crusoe" (as Angus names him) is utterly, irresistibly adorable: a ginormous, amphibian puppy. Quickly outgrowing his temporary quarters in the loo, Crusoe comes face-to-face with the MacMorrows' other pet, an English Bulldog. This accidental meeting yields a series of funny moments that recall the Looney Tunes, updated to a totally contemporary, live-action-meets-CGI context.

Eventually, it comes time for Crusoe to swim in a bigger pond. And that's when the movie's good, old-fashioned environmental message comes across loud and clear: Let's not endanger our extraordinary species, even if - especially if - they seem too extraordinary to be real.

This movie is a great holiday gift to kids of all ages, and here's something to enable a sneak peek while waiting for it to arrive in theaters: while counting down to the Christmas release date, check out the official blog, a 21st-century version of an advent calendar.
