The Brave One

Posted on Oct 14, 2007 By Julia Szabo

In director Neil Jordan's new movie The Brave One, Jodie Foster and Naveen Andrews play an engaged couple out for a nighttime walk in Central Park with their German Shepherd, Curtis. Tossing a ball for Curtis to fetch, they stop for a kiss and a cuddle - only to find the dog has gone missing. Upon entering a dark, scary tunnel, they see Curtis at the end of his leash - except the leash is held by a thug who demands a reward for returning the dog.

What ensues is not just a dog lover's worst nightmare, but a brutal scene that propels the rest of the story, a wrenching tale of revenge that's an imaginative update of the Charles Bronson classic Death Wish from a woman's POV. The dog playing Curtis has his own compelling story independent of the script: Butch began life as one of a litter of pups abandoned at a New Jersey animal shelter. He rose to the occasion, holding his own alongside a famous Oscar winner, even rating his own stunt double, according to the agency that groomed him for his closeup. And although Butch doesn't get a huge amount of screen time, what's there (to quote Spencer Tracy in Pat and Mike) is choice: The dog is definitely a catalyst for the movie's action. His presence is keenly felt as a symbol of something lost and found - and a messenger of unconditional love that, if a person is lucky, sometimes arrives when she needs it most.
