The Adventures of Milo and Otis

It would be hard to imagine a more sweet-hearted film than this gently meandering tale of a Pug (yes, he's one of the more intrepid manifestations of the breed) and his best friend, a marmalade kitten. Any narrative is fairly beside the point: what passes for storyline has to do with their youthful play starting a fall of the dominoes that leads them far downriver from their farm.

Their separation out in the wilderness creates a soft sort of tension, but the viewer knows that such fast friends will find each other once more in the end. And when they do, it's when the cycle of life has brought them to the apex, and the creation of a new line of Milos and Otises, who will undoubtedly soon have their own adventures together.

This is a Japanese production, and the cinematography is splendid as the dog and cat wander into and out of encounters with the natural world and its denizens: owls, foxes, raccoons, porcupines, sea turtles, pigs, and chickens, among others. The Hollywood convention of providing well-known actors' voices for the characters is here eschewed for a lower-key narration by Dudley Moore. This has the effect of calling attention to where it belongs most: the visual riches onscreen.

My resident critic and in-house authority on kids' movies, 8-year-old Raphael, was enthralled (though I suspect at any younger age he would have been less taken by the National Geographic Special aspect of the picture). "That's for me!" he exclaimed. "Having adventures with my friends."

I am so glad he can identify with a Pug. They're very cute.
