Reservation Road (Focus Features, 2007, 102 minutes) - Opening Friday, October 19, 2007

Director Terry George (Hotel Rwanda) helms this haunting story, based on the novel by John Burnham Schwartz, of a family's devastation after their 10-year-old son is killed by a hit-and-run driver. You need to be brave to put yourself through this movie experience - come prepared with an ample supply of tissues - but the tears are well worth it, for Joaquin Phoenix, Jennifer Connelly, and Mark Ruffalo all give Oscar-buzz-generating performances (and Connelly is especially notable). A border collie named Jake makes a brief yet key appearance as the bereaved family's dog; in his big scene, he meets an 11-year-old named Luke (played by the talented Eddie Alderson, at left in photo, with Joaquin Phoenix) and "high-fives" him - a trick, we discover, the dog only ever did for the boy he lost. The border collie doesn't get a ton of screen time, but his brief turn adds depth and dimension to an already very moving story by showing us the undying love a dog has for his boy - and reminding us that canine family members need our support during the grieving process too.
