Juno (Fox Searchlight, 2007, 92 minutes)

Everyone's talking about this quirky take on the difficult topic of teen pregnancy, which features a crackling script by Diablo Cody, fine performances from an ensemble cast including Jennifer Garner and Jason Bateman, and star-making turns by Ellen Page as bittersweet-16 Juno and, as her best friend, Olivia Thirlby (this child is not only gorgeous, she's a RADA-trained Shakespearean actor). But no one mentions the dogs.

True, there's not a great deal of canine action, other than the unfortunate moment when a frustrated Juno yells at a poor, chained, barking dog to "Shut your f------ gob!" Yet one of the most complex characters in the movie, Juno's stepmom Bren (played by the excellent Allison Janney), is described by the title character as "totally obsessed with dogs."

That's not an overstatement: We learn that Bren must wait to indulge her dog love because Juno's allergic to canine saliva - so in the meantime, she works on a needlepoint image of a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and collects dog figurines (one frame reveals a handsome bust of a Collie).

Dog lovers can rest assured that, along with the other characters in this fabulously fractured fairy tale, Bren gets her happy ending, too.
