The last-man-on-Earth theme of Richard Matheson's 1954 novel has been adapted for the screen twice before - as the 1971 Charlton Heston sci-fi classic The Omega Man and before that, as the Vincent Price vehicle The Last Man on Earth - but never so convincingly as in this retelling, and never before with a canine as a central character. This film leaves you with truly haunting images of deserted major Manhattan thoroughfares; tall weeds growing up out of famed stretches of concrete are sure to disturb your dreams.

Through this wasteland walks Dr. Robert Neville (Will Smith), sole human survivor of a plague that's killed his fellow Earthlings or, worse, turned those it didn't kill into bald, vibrating zombies. For protection, the doctor carries an assault rifle; for companionship, he has his dog, a gorgeous German Shepherd named Sam. By day, the two hunt deer on Park Avenue and in Times Square; by night, they sleep in Neville's bed.

Every day the doctor struggles to come up with the cure to the virus in his basement laboratory; every night at dusk, his watch alarm reminds him it's time to arm his windows and doors with metal gates, protection from shrieking zombies-at-large. Sounds like a schlockfest, you say? It isn't, and what saves it from becoming one is the profound friendship between doctor and dog. The scenes of them together - dining on canned food, running on tandem treadmills, curled up together in a bath tub - comprise one of the screen's most realistic, touching portrayals of the canine-human bond.
