Tom Hanks produces and stars in this film, based on the book by George Crile, about hard-partying congressman Charlie Wilson, Texas Democrat, who teamed up with right-wing Houston socialite Joanne Herring (Julia Roberts) and rogue CIA agent Gust Avrakotos (Philip Seymour Hoffman) to give clandestine military support to the Afghan mujaheddin as they battled Soviet occupation in the 1980s. Blurring the line between legal and illegal government intervention, the three Americans' stranger-than-fiction scheme was the largest and most successful covert operation in history, and ultimately contributed to the end of the Cold War.

Historically, movies about slippery political schemers don't usually enable their subjects to end up smelling like roses (hello, Richard Nixon). But no small part of the real empathy the audience feels for Wilson and Herring is thanks to their sincere love of dogs.

As Herring, Roberts makes quite a grand entrance flanked by a handsome pair of greyhounds, who rarely leave her side; whether appearing together at a gala party, in bed, or out by the pool, the trio is an Erté lithograph come to life. Even when the actual dogs are not in the frame, their likenesses are, in the form of oil paintings and bas reliefs depicting greyhounds (plus a striking, life-size, bronze greyhound statue).

Wilson, meanwhile keeps an orange tabby cat in his Washington office, where his all-female staff is called "Charlie's Angels." But his moving recollection of an incident involving his childhood dog reveals how a pet can actually motivate a person to dedicate himself to a cause; in Wilson's case, Teddy the dog occasioned his political awakening.

Kudos to director Mike Nichols and screenwriter Aaron Sorkin for incorporating canines in this very smart, very entertaining movie with such singularly enlightened creativity.
