The Weinstein Company, 2007, 108 minutes To view the trailer, go here The title of Woody Allen's newest - and quite possibly darkest - film is also the name of a dog: the underdog Greyhound that wins chronic gambler Terry Blaine (Colin Farrell) money in a race, which he uses to purchase a boat with his brother Ian (Ewan McGregor). The money multiplies after a poker game - then is promptly lost again. Just as Terry's agonizing over what to do about the circling loan sharks, Ian drops by hoping to borrow money. Now the cash-poor brothers must ask their rich uncle Howard (Tom Wilkinson) for help. Howard's happy to oblige - the guy is so understanding, he doesn't even deliver a lecture. He does, however, have one stomach-churning condition, which locks the brothers in a contemporary update on Greek tragedy, complete with an ambitious Helen of Troy (played to perfection by newcomer Hayley Atwell). How appropriate that this Hitchcock-thrilling meditation on the cruelty of fate is punctuated by the cruel sport of Greyhound racing. Whether we walk on four legs or two, some of us can't outrun destiny.
