Best in Show

Warner Brothers, 2000, 90 minutes - add this title to your Netflix queue

If you don't think this is one of the funniest movies ever, then you're not a dog owner. Or neurotic. (Wait: aren't they the same thing?)

But I am, and I think Christopher Guest's skewering of the various pathologies manifested in the world of competitive dog showing is downright hilarious. In fact, it's second only to This Is Spinal Tap, a similarly styled "mockumentary" in which Guest also had a hand (and a hairdo).

Parody works because it veers close enough to the truth to make us feel a tad uncomfortable, and so it is with the five competitors who each aim to make their dog Best in Show at the fabled Mayflower Kennel Club Dog Show (think Westminster, OK?).

Their hapless canines are blank screens for projecting their own over-the-top but unacknowledged impulses: the siliconed young dumbbell wife of an elderly millionaire, her lesbian handler, and their standard poodle; a dimwitted Southern rube (played by Guest) and his bloodhound; a materialistic and argumentative young couple with their depressed Weimaraner; a mismatched suburban husband and wife who own a winsome Norwich terrier; and a flamboyant gay couple with hairstyled-to-the-max Shih Tzus.

Which of these undeserving competitors is going home with the big trophy? It's hardly a chore to wait until the end of this hugely entertaining film to find out. I'm not going to spoil the surprise.
