A Kid's Take: The Incredible Adventures of Wallace & Gromit

BBC Video/Warner Bros., 1989, 85 min.

These three movies are crazy! Wallace is an inventor, and Gromit is his dog. They're made of animated clay (the same guy who made them, Nick Park, made the movie "Chicken Run," which you gotta see). Gromit may be part Beagle, I think. He doesn't have any eyebrows (well, neither does Wallace), and he doesn't speak, not even in the neat British accent Wallace does, but he gets his emotions across with his big, round eyes and his ears.

There are three movies here: "The Wrong Trousers," "A Grand Day Out," and "A Close Shave." I couldn't tell you which is better, because I love them all. I think I've seen this video a hundred times, and I'll probably see it a hundred times more.

I say the movies are crazy, because you wouldn't believe some of the things that happen in them. Gromit rides in Wallace's sidecar, and once it runs away from the motorcycle and drops off a nearby cliff. But Gromit presses all the buttons on the dashboard and it becomes a plane!

This is just one of the things Gromit can do, because he's a talented dog. Wallace taught him to do lots of things, like how to operate all his inventions. That's why I can't guess who is smarter: Wallace, for making things like the Knit-O-Matic, where you put a sheep in a machine that washes, dries, and shaves it, then makes a sweater; or Gromit, because he can fix the things that always go wrong.

Whenever I watch a movie, I always try to imagine which of the characters I'd be. This time I'd choose Gromit. And I have to tell you that after this, you should watch him in "The Curse of the Were-Rabbit." More smart Gromit!
