A Kid's Take: Far From Home: The Adventures of Yellow Dog

Twentieth Century Fox, 1995, 81 minutes - add this title to your Netflix queue

Let me tell you first about one of the best parts. I got a knot in my stomach when the search planes kept flying over over and didn't see the lost boy and his dog. But if they had, the movie would be very short. And a whole lot less exciting.

I'm glad it was long, so I could really enjoy this story about a boy named Angus and his Labrador Retriever he called Yellow. When they go on a trip in Canada, they get lost, stranded on an island alone. The boy helps the dog, and the dog helps the boy: they're very close friends. Together they save themselves from starving to death, and getting hurt by bears and wildcats.

It made me feel like Angus and Yellow were heroes right out of the kind of old storybook I like best, the kind that you can't stop reading until you reach the end and find out what happens to them both. The movie gets really scary when Yellow falls off a log over a high ravine - just when the boy gets found, it looks like the dog is lost! You should hear Angus yell, "No! Yellow!!"

But when Angus goes home sad, he gets a wonderful surprise: the pitterpat of dog feet at last.

What I wonder is why does his little brother always dresses up in a superhero's cape? It is Angus and his friend Yellow who show the real courage here.

If you like big adventure, you will really enjoy this movie. And that goes double if you like dogs.
