While out and about this summer, you're sure to encounter many fellow dog people and their plethora of different dogs. If you want to make the most of dog and dog-people watching, keep Diane Morgan's "Your Inner Dog" nearby. This book is a one of a kind reference guide to people's personalities based on breed preference and can help you quickly ascertain more in-depth information on who it is you're observing.

Like any good reference volume, there are a couple different ways to use this book. The first is to take the short quiz provided and figure out which category of dog you fit into. You may be directed to "Valiant and Vivacious", home of the Boxer , Petite Basset Griffon Vendeen and Great Pyrenees; or perhaps "Cultured and Classic," like the Afghan Hound, Dalmatian, and Irish Setter.

Each category consists of several breed specific profiles you can check out to see what fits you best. The other option is to do what I did and take a short-cut by simply looking up the breed you currently own and see if it's a fit. You may be surprised to learn some new things about yourself. Among the information shared is character, food preferences, and career strengths. For example Shar-Pei people are extremely spontaneous, Chow-Chow people love the kitchen, and Papillon people flourish in law enforcement careers. Many of the breed traits connect back to ancestral heritage, which is a nice reminder of the culture and history our dogs bring with them. For instance Morgan says about Viszla people's palates, "Just as you love your Hungarian dog, so do you love Hungarian foods: goulash, chicken paprika, and anything with onions."

Once you've had a laugh over your own type, look up your friends, family, and coworkers based on what kind of dog they have and then be sure to make the most of the information you discover. If your boss happens to have a Chinese Crested, bringing in some smoked trout mousse or apple pie crepes may be the way to that promotion you've been after. Appropriately I've found this book listed under both the psychology/personality section and humor section of book retailers. It's meant to be fun, interactive, and informative...in other words a great gift for any dog lover who doesn't take themselves too seriously.
