The subtitle of "The Daily Coyote" boasts similar themes to those explored in "Scent of the Missing" -- love, survival, trust; yet this book couldn't be more different. The love affair begins with a cross country vespa ride. Somewhere in Wyoming with its open mountain view and crisp country air, Shreve Stockton's heart was captured. Weeks later she found herself relocating from the concrete urban jungle of New York City to the rural cattle land of Ten Sleep, Wyoming.

The life she finds there seems to perfectly perpetuate her carefree ways, until she is handed a baby coyote she christens Charlie. On the family tree Canis latrans, commonly known as coyote,is not more than a branch or two away from Canis lupis familiaris, or the family dog. Stockton's experiences raising Charlie expose a tail-wagging, tummy-rub loving side that lurks just beneath the surface of these naturally wild animals.

In turn, the responsibility of caring for Charlie imposes a welcome accountability on Stockton, forcing her to try on characteristics she had long avoided. "I had always been wild; I had always found the joy in little things. Instead, what Charlie had shown me, what he had inspired me to do, was willingly give up some of my wildness, for love." Together the two of them (plus one initially reluctant cat) frolic, explore, and even battle as they determine the nature of their unique relationship.

Lucky for us Stockton's talents extend beyond writing to photography. Gorgeous pictures of Charlie growing from a cute tiny fluff-ball of a pup into a somewhat intimidating full-growncoyote with piercing eyes greatly enhance Stockton's journalistic approach. Some of these same photos garnered quite an internet following back in 2007 eventually leading to the book, whichonly covers Charlie's first year with Stockton. Thankfully the blog is still up and running so you can always check out  www.dailycoyote.net after you're done reading for up-to-date news on Charlie and Stockton's life.
