When Uno the Beagle took 2008 Best in Show at Westminster, it was an event - the first time in history that one of Snoopy's brethren won Top Dog at the country's most prestigious canine beauty pageant. The worldwide popularity of Beagles is due partly to the enduring legacy of the Peanuts; Charlie Brown's dog is everybody's best friend, so Uno's Snoopyness doubtless helped propel him to the top.

But even before Uno's historic win, the publishing world had a Beagle-istic event of its own with the launch, in 2004, of a most ambitious project: The Complete Peanuts, comprising 25 books spanning 50 years, released by Fantagraphics at a rate of two titles per year over twelve and a half years.

Unlike that other publishing event, the scandalizing Schulz and Peanuts: A Biography, this one has the full blessing of Charles M. Schulz's nearest and dearest. Plus, the great-looking book covers were designed by fellow cartoonist, the one-name wonder Seth.

Literally hundreds of Peanuts books have been published over the years, but many of the strips from the series' first few years (it was born in 1950) had never been collected before. Among the surprises are some key characterizations that are quite different from the cast of kids we grew up with: Schroeder, Lucy, and Linus all appear initially as infants, and Snoopy makes his debut as a puppy!

Here's something you can't say about very many books: Any one or all of these eight (so far) delightful volumes, each about 320 pages, would make a perfect any-occasion present for everyone on your gift list. This should make holiday and birthday shopping a cinch for, oh, the next eight years; as funny Valentines, they can't be beat. And if it's yourself you're gifting, you could happily go broke collecting 'em all.
