When they say "complete," they're not kidding (excuse the pun). It would be hard to come up with one dog-oriented item not covered in this colorful, oversized paperback introduction to dog ownership geared to kids, but worthy of adults, too. From how to choose the right dog to safety tips, dog sports, training, anatomy, grooming, and health care, it's all here in a breezy yet thorough text.

The book's creme-filled center, as it were--and the part kids of all ages will relish most, I suspect--is the catalog of dog breeds, lavishly illustrated with full-color photographs. To test my hypothesis, I showed the book to my in-house critic, age 8.

He immediately turned to a search for his favorite breed (also, coincidentally, mine), the Border Collie, and found a handsome example posed majestically and given his own page. And, the boy then exclaimed, "Did you know Border Collies are now used by golf courses to shoo away Canada geese?" This he gleaned from the sidebar of "fun facts" that accompany every breed.

A dog-loving child (or parent) couldn't do much better for a first book in a library on dogs that will surely grow, after being started in such fertile ground.
