For those of you without cable television (like me), you may not have heard of Rescue Ink, an alternative animal rescue group currently appearing on National Geographic Channel's Rescue Fridays. Thankfully you don't have to sign up for any extra channels to get a taste for what these guys are about; "Rescue Ink" is now available in book form.

Denise Flaim introduces us chapter by chapter to Batso, Johnny O, Des, G, Big Ant and the rest of the members of this nonprofit Long Island-based organization. These are big guys with big tattoos and even bigger hearts. Some of them have checkered pasts, making it even more appropriate that they are the ones giving animals a second chance at a good life.

The testosterone fueled bunch offers a refreshingly realistic approach to helping animals. They standup for what they believe in and are unafraid to confront those doing wrong. They proactively educate youth and willingly team-up with other rescue organizations. Perhaps most importantly, they accept that the perfect solution isn't always possible, but recognize any little bit of help is a step in the right direction.
The writers and editors saved the best and most representative story of Rescue Ink for last--that of a super-friendly stray pit bull whose ears had been so mangled he was called Ribbons. After flying him to New York from Kentucky, helping him heal physically, and starting on some basic obedience classes they re-christened him, Rebel. "'It's cool to rescue,' says Johnny O. 'It's not a nerdy thing or inappropriate because a lot of women do it. If you love animals, you love animals. And it just shows that you don't judge a book by its cover.' Just like Rebel [formerly Ribbons]. And just like Rescue Ink."

Considering it's been less than two years since Rescue Ink appeared on the radar in New York City, it's amazing this book already exists. Be forewarned this literary version can easily leave you yearning for more, and the television show may be the best way to monitor the continued difference Rescue Ink is sure to make.
