Seemingly old photographs, with their gray-yellow hue, of dogs in their daily lives adorn glossy pages, setting the perfect tone for a trip down memory lane. Yet don't be deceived by this classic hardcover coffee-table book packaging. Venturing beyond the Bulldog on the dust jacket reveals a touching array of adventures in the lives of some very modern dogs.

Author Dana Thomas gathers the short stories, poetry, and even song lyrics of five fellow "dog people" to create this expressive collection of doggie tales. Each extremely personal account is teamed with one of ten qualities, such as responsibility, which are defined to canine standards at the beginning of each chapter.

Under the theme of "Inclusion," the author shares her own amusing experience of trying out four different dogs over the course of 20 years before finding the perfect match in a Bulldog with a Lithuanian heritage originally named Artemis Perkunkimis. Thomas makes it known that "Dozer," as he's now known, was well worth the wait by giving him full acknowledgments on the Preface page.

Although it would be nice to know which dog photo corresponds with which story, the writing paints a clear enough picture in the imagination. From a Blue-Heeler mix saving a Dachshund/Beagle from the jaws of an alligator to a Border Collie dancing for food, these tales run the gamut of comedy, sentiment, and daring. Running at three pages tops, each independent piece is brief enough to curb a Book Hound's appetite for some dog-inspired reading without the time commitment demanded of a novel...or entertain that house guest who happens to pick it up off the coffee table.
