A popular holiday theme is "Peace on Earth"; yet as we shop and wrap and bake and sing it's important to remember that
parts of the world are far from peace. There is no better example of how war affects all lives than the fantastically sweet book "Nubs: The True Story of a Mutt, a Marine, and a Miracle."

Newly published in time to be gifted, "Nubs" is about a stray dog with hacked off ears, who was wandering around the forts of Iraq until he took to one particular marine's belly rubs so much that he tracked the Major seventy miles across war-torn country in search of his new found friend.

It's not often a book involving present day war is geared towards children but everything in these pages has been appropriately adapted. The atrocities suffered by the Iraqis, the marines, and the stray dogs living in these areas are simplified. The bright and colorful layout is eye-catching and fun - in direct contrast with the drab grays and browns of desert war prevalent in the amazing photographs chronicling Nubs's interactions with the marines.

While the focus is certainly on the dog who survived so much--war, starvation, battles with other dogs over scarce food, wounds, and extreme weather--it's important to pay credit to the brave and generous Major Brian Dennis, who not only was out there defending peace and freedom but willingly shared his food and bed with a loyal stray. Major Dennis even put his career on the line when told to get rid of the dog. The effort made to get the funds and assistance required to transport Nubs back to his home in the United States illustrates the love that can be unlocked by a dog even in a time of war.

Children will absolutely adore this story, but for adults who have lost that sweet naivete of youth, the tale is bittersweet. It's hard to forget that war still rages and lives still suffer, but let Major and Nubs be a rare good thing coming from war, a glimmer of peace and love.
