Yesterday (March 23, 2010) was National Puppy Day. For those who chose to honor it by bringing home a four-legged bundle of joy, it's time to reach for "Move Over, Rover." After all, selecting a name for your new pooch can be just as difficult as picking out the pup herself. For the next ten plus years, this is a word you will be cooing in moments of love, calling across the dog park, yelling in frustration, and potentially getting imprinted on blankets, bags, bowls, and more. In other words it's pretty darn important that both you and your dog like it.

"Move Over, Rover" was written by Kyra Kirkwood as a guide through this significant process. "Instead of choosing names based on tradition (Fido) or appearance (Fluffy), this book will help you match names to puppies' personalities in an effort to settle on the truly perfect combination." After taking the puppy personality quiz, you can search through dozens of names that Kirkwood has provided to fit the Wallflower, Cheerleader, 9-To-5er, Don, Lone Ranger, Couch Potato, Jock, Diva and the Pretty Boy.

Once you get the hang of how Kirkwood has broken up the name lists with info tidbits for grooming, shopping, training and more, it's easy enough to find an "m" name meaning "of uncommon beauty" for your Diva dog. Despite Kirkwood's push for the new and unique she doesn't neglect the famous and the infamous; including cartoon dogs (Astro, Goofy, Snoopy), famous people's dogs (Sandra Bullock has Bob, Kernie, April, Poppy, and Ruby), presidential dogs (Dwight D. Eisenhower's Heidi), and dogs from television (like Golden Retriever Digby from "Pushing Daisies"; whatever happened to that show anyway?)

I've already turned to this book at least twice to help friends come up with name ideas and have experienced firsthand that even if you don't find exactly what you're looking for, "Move Over, Rover" certainly inspires the mind to the infinite name possibilities--and the importance of picking the right one.
